Arbois Vin Jaune 14º 62cl 2010 £39.95

The 'yellow wine' for which the Jura is best known. The Savagnin grapes are late picked and after fermentation the wine is stored in oak casks for a minimum of 6 years and 3 months. Evaporation (13cl - known as the angels' share - are lost from every 75cl, giving the odd Clavelin bottle size and shape) allows air into the cask and and a film of yeast (or voile) forms on top of the wine. In taste its nearest familiar relation would be a fine old fino sherry with a slightly nutty and spicy nose and like sherry it is drunk as an aperitif but also with nuts or cheese (great with Comté!) or foie gras.
If you feel the price is a bit steep for a wine you don't know, why not try the younger Savagnin or the Savagnin/Chardonnay blend?
